Born in Cape Town, Solly Gutman commenced working in the Scraperboard medium in 1968, and this has remained his exclusive medium. He is largely self-taught, with the exception of an art course from the London College of Art. 

Solly has held a number of solo and joint exhibitions in South Africa and has some exciting exhibitions coming up in 2009. He recently won his second medal at the International Biennale of Botanical Fine Art which was held at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. He has won awards at the 2006 and 2008 Biennale. At the recent 101st Annual Exhibition of the South African Society of Artists at Kirstenbosch in October, he obtained the Anne Lee Trophy for the Best Drawing on show, being “cnr Hanover and Tennant Streets District Six. 

Solly has produced images of the historical Robben Island and has created a calendar and postcards with the Robben Island images. You can see the entire Robben Island collection on this website.

Solly has appeared on local South African television where he spoke about his works as well as Scraperboard Art in general. He has held special workshops for the under privileged where he has taught up and coming scraperboard artists.

 

He was previously on the Executive of the South African Society of Artists (SASA), and is presently an active member of the Botanical Artists Association of Southern Africa (BAASA).

 

He is currently working on new images for the 2008/2009 exhibitions as well as the 2008/2009-tourist season in South Africa.
